5 Things to Know About Matias Almeyda

Get to know the Quakes new head coach

The San Jose Earthquakes shocked the soccer world by unveiling Matias Almeyda as the team’s head coach, starting in 2019. Here are five things to know about the Quakes’ new boss.

1. Almeyda is 44 years old and has eight years of head-coaching experience in Mexico and Argentina.

2. He was most recently head coach of Chivas de Guadalajara (2015-18), where he led them to five major trophies in three seasons, including the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League.

3. Prior to Chivas, he was head coach of two clubs in his native Argentina (River Plate and Banfield) and led both of them to promotion from the second tier in his first season with each.

4. Almeyda was a successful player in Argentina and Europe, making nearly 300 appearances for clubs around the world. The majority of his playing career was spent in Italy, appearing for Inter, Lazio and Parma, among others. He also earned 35 caps for the Argentina National Team and represented his nation of birth at two FIFA World Cups (1998 and 2002).

5. He was linked to many high-profile jobs before San Jose’s announcement, including several in MLS and Europe. He was also linked to the Mexico, Costa Rica and Argentina National Team openings, among others.
